New Astra opens for orders with comprehensive powertrain range

If you've been keeping an eye on the Vauxhall range, you'll know the new Astra has been generating a lot of interest — and now we're delighted to confirm that orders are officially open here at James Haugh in Dumfries. Whether you're after a fully electric family car, a practical plug-in hybrid, or a no-fuss petrol automatic, the new Astra has a version to suit you. Here's everything you need to know.

A Fresh Look, A Sharper Range

The new Astra arrives with a more distinctive, confident exterior design — taking clear inspiration from Vauxhall's bold Experimental concept car. Think sharper lines, the signature illuminated Vizor front end, and the kind of road presence that makes it stand out on Dumfries High Street and the A75 alike. Underneath that striking exterior, the powertrain range is the most comprehensive the Astra has ever offered:

  • 1.2-litre Petrol Automatic — a new addition to the range, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. 130PS, 0–62mph in 9.7 seconds, and up to 48.7mpg. Prices from £27,495 OTR.
  • 48V Mild Hybrid — efficient everyday motoring with a light electrification boost.
  • Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) — for drivers who want the flexibility of both electric and petrol.
  • Astra Electric — the fully electric version, now with a larger 58.3kWh battery and a range of up to 281 miles (WLTP) — a 22-mile improvement over the outgoing model. Prices from £28,495 OTR (including the £1,500 Electric Car Grant).

Electric for Less Than Hybrid? Here's Why That Matters

One of the most striking things about the new Astra's pricing is that the Electric version is actually £1,500 less expensive than the equivalent hybrid and plug-in hybrid models — once the £1,500 Electric Car Grant is applied. That's a genuinely unusual position in the market, and it makes the electric Astra worth serious consideration if you've been on the fence about making the switch. With everyday running costs lower than petrol or diesel, and home charging infrastructure improving all the time, now could be the right moment to take the leap.

Sports Tourer: Same Price, More Space

If you're a family, a dog owner, or simply someone who likes a bit of extra boot room, here's something you'll appreciate: the Astra Sports Tourer estate is priced identically to the hatchback across every trim level and powertrain. There's no premium for the extra practicality — which is, frankly, unusual in today's market. Both body styles are available from the same starting price, so you can choose based on what suits your lifestyle rather than your budget.

Under the £40,000 Threshold

Worth noting: every version of the new Astra is priced below the £40,000 threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement — saving customers £2,200 in Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) over the first six years of ownership. In a segment where some comparable cars stray above that mark, it's a meaningful saving.

Three Trim Levels to Choose From

Griffin (from £27,495 OTR)

The entry-level trim that doesn't feel entry-level. You get 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation, and adaptive cruise control — all as standard.

GS (from £28,995 OTR)

Sportier looks with 18-inch black alloys and a more dynamic front bumper. Adds keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and the upgraded Pure Panel Pro infotainment with a seamless 10-inch touchscreen and 10-inch digital instrument cluster in an edge-to-edge glass display.

Ultimate (from £31,495 OTR)

The range-topper. Intelli-Lux HD headlights, heated and massaging front seats (both AGR-certified), a head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, blind spot alert, rear cross traffic alert, and — on the Sports Tourer — a power tailgate. If you want the full package, this is it.

Vauxhall Electric All In Package

Customers ordering the Astra Electric also benefit from Vauxhall's Electric All In package, which takes a lot of the practical uncertainty out of going electric. It includes:

  • Eight years of comprehensive roadside assistance, including emergency charging support
  • £500 credit towards a home wallbox installation (via Octopus Energy's Ohme Pro), or charging credit with Electroverse, Connected Kerb, or Tesco
  • 10,000 miles of free home charging when you switch to the Intelligent Octopus GO energy tariff
  • Unlimited Vauxhall Connect Plus connected services
