Vauxhall doesn't launch a hot hatch very often. The last time the badge appeared on a Corsa was the VXR, and that disappeared from the range eight years ago. So when we tell you the wait is over, it's worth sitting up and taking notice — because the new Corsa GSE isn't just a return to form, it looks like one of the most convincing performance EVs this side of £35,000. This is Vauxhall's first proper hot hatch of the electric era, and the early verdicts from the motoring press suggest it's landed with real substance behind the badge.
What's actually changed
Underneath the familiar Corsa silhouette, the GSE gets the works. Power comes from a 276bhp front-mounted motor — more than double what you'll find in a standard Corsa Electric — sent through the front wheels via a Torsen limited-slip differential, a proper mechanical component rather than an electronic workaround. Vauxhall's engineers have gone further still, fitting reworked front and rear axles, stiffer anti-roll bars, new dampers with hydraulic bump stops, and a chassis set-up reportedly honed on the Nürburgring. Stopping power comes from four-piston Alcon brakes, with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres wrapped around new 18-inch GSE-specific wheels. The numbers back it up. 0-62mph arrives in 5.5 seconds, and official range is quoted at 232 miles — a healthy figure for a car with genuine performance intent. Three drive modes let you match the car to the moment: a range-friendly Eco setting, a balanced Normal mode capped at 228bhp, and a full-fat Sport mode that unlocks all 276bhp for when the road (or track) allows. Inside, the GSE treatment is unmistakable, with sculpted performance seats trimmed in Alcantara and a distinctive checked fabric, contrast seatbelts, aluminium pedals and GSE-branded displays — details that nod to the Vauxhall Nova GSi and VXR cars of years gone by without feeling like a costume.
Where it sits in the class
What's really turned heads in the press is the pricing. The Corsa GSE will be available from £34,495, dropping to an expected £32,995 once the Government's Electric Car Grant is applied (approval is still pending at the time of writing, so this figure isn't guaranteed). That undercuts closely matched rivals like the Alpine A290 GTS and Mini John Cooper Works Electric on price, while out-accelerating both of them to 62mph. It's also quicker than the mechanically related Peugeot 208 GTi, Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica Veloce, despite sharing much of the same underpinnings — no small achievement for the brand that used to be dismissed as the sensible choice. Perhaps the most eye-catching comparison of all is with the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Corsa GSE is quicker to 62mph and comes in at roughly £9,000 less — a genuinely startling gap for anyone cross-shopping hot hatches this year.

Vauxhall has confirmed the Corsa GSE will open for order in September 2026, with first deliveries expected over the winter.
