What is the Motability scheme?

James Haugh is proud to support Motability - helping people with disabilities get out and about independently.

Motability can give you or someone you know access to a brand new car, tailored to your specific needs. At James Haugh, our Motability specialists will be happy to discuss the benefits of each model from the Vauxhall and MG range for you, and to arrange any adaptations to your car that may be necessary.

​Supporting your independence

Have your own car that's been adapted to your own needs can give you much more day-to-day freedom. Being able to drive or be driven to wherever you want to go to!

Motability will help you get on the road and stay on the road, with a brand new car adjusted specifically to your requirements every three years. What's more, most of your running costs will be covered by your allowance, so your main expense will just be fuel.

What is included?

  • All servicing and maintenance
  • MOT, Road Tax and windscreen repair
  • Insurance and accident cover for two drivers, plus passengers
  • Insurance cover for driving abroad
  • Full breakdown cover
  • Tyre repair and replacement
  • An allowance of up to 60,000 over your three years with a brand new car

The Motability scheme covers a wide range of adaptions to make sure that you're comfortable in your brand new car - from driving controls to accelerators. Our Motability team at James Haugh will be happy to discuss these with you.

To join the scheme, we'll first check whether you're eligible - you can read more about that below. After that, our Motability specialists will be happy to arrange your perfect brand new car for you.

Who is eligible for the Motability scheme?

Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)

This allowance is £62.55 per week, as of April 2021.

  • If you are aged between 16 and 64, you must have 12-months of your allowance remaining to be eligible for the scheme.
  • If you have less than 12-months, your mobility component will now be assessed through Personal Independence Payment (see below).
  • If you were 65 on or before 8 April 2013 (20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland) and have 12 months or more left on your DLA higher rate mobility component, you are eligible for Motability.
  • If your child is under 16 and has 12 months or more left on their DLA higher rate mobility component, they are eligible for Motability.

Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)

This allowance is £62.55 per week, as of April 2021.​

  • As part of the government’s Welfare Reform programme, for disabled people aged between 16 and 64, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being replaced by the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit.
  • This process began in April 2013 in Great Britain and 20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland.
  • You must have 12-months of your allowance remaining to be eligible for the Motability Scheme.
  • If you have less than 12 months remaining or you have received a letter from the DWP inviting you to apply for PIP, you can discuss extending the lease on your current car with our Motability team so you can keep it until you find out the result.
  • If you are no longer eligible to use the Scheme but joined before 2013, you will be offered a transition support package by Motability.
  • Our Motability specialists at James Haugh will be happy to discuss your options with you.​

War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

This allowance is £69.85 per week, as of April 2021.​

  • If you are receiving the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (provided by Veterans UK), you are eligible for Motability.

Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

  • The Welfare Reform Act 2012 introduced AFIP as a new allowance. If you are receiving the Armed Forces Independence Payment, you are eligible for Motability.
